Krazy Glue Accidents

I remember back in the day when Krazy Glue was first introduced.   They had those commercials of that guy in a construction helmet, cemented to that I-beam hanging from the air.  Since then, they have a lot more uses for Krazy Glue, and the glue itself, is much better.

A tube of Super glue

It’s call cyanoacrylate, and these days we use it as the active ingredient in Dermabond, a skin glue for minor lacerations.  This idea probably came from the many instances, that people glued their own hands, or eyelids, or lips or nostrils shut.   I’ve seen it all!

So here’s the simple antidote for accidental Krazy Glue jobs . . . . .  oil.  Mineral oil, olive oil, whatever kind of oil, just soak the parts, and the glue will eventually let go.  For eyelids, if its not burning the eyeball, get some mineral oil, soak a small cloth, and continue to soak the eyelid until the glue releases.  Do the same with other body parts.

Maybe someday, I’ll tell you about the time I glued myself to a kid I was trying to fix a laceration on . . . . . .

Simple as that? Fortunately, my cases with Krazy Glue were not too serious, just a couple of fingers sticking together. LOL

Also, I know now why Krazy Glue is not great for anything with oil in it, like a broken battery-operated toy with grease and lubricants and stuff like that.

For eyelids you should get to the ER as soon as possible. In the case like that you definitely need professional help.

When you say you’ve seen it all, do you real mean ALL? :P If you catch my drift.

Yeah that’s life. But if we just have good chemical education in school we would know how to melt the glue and get rid of it by ourselves. Every chemical substance can be melted with use of another. Have you seen “Fight Club”? There is one of that information: never try to get rid of acid with water, use vinegar. I know that this is only a movie, but to be honest: we don’t know what to do and almost always need help from other people. And if we knew more about how things are done, we could help ourselves quicker and better. And maybe we wouldn’t hurt ourselves that much.

Such accidents could happen to anyone. Well, almost anyone ;) But there is nothing to laugh about, this could be a serious threat to anyone’s health. The glue is the most dangerous to small children. If small child would eat some… could die. And even sniffing the glue is considered to be toxic and dangerous. So there is no play with glue, the tubes should be well-hidden in every home.

Thankfully I’ve not had any encounter of having glued my eyelids etc, I know that scenario would be painful for the person, however I used to play with glues hehe, I used to stick both my hands with glues and then before they dry up, quickly wash my hands so their effect is gone. I’ll keep the oil technique in my mind. Thank you.

So the lesson is that before we try to use any form of Krazy glue, we should have a supply of oil ready for emergencies. Pity they don’t print this warning/tip on the tube of glue itself.

You have to be careful with adhesives as strong as crazy glue. It is that strong for a reason and often unlikely to go without a fight.

Excellent study, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing a little research on that. And he actually purchased me lunch because I discovered it for him smile So allow me rephrase that: Many thanks for lunch!
